Triumviratus what's new?

Changes since the pre-release of 29 October

Search

  • Aspiration windows and optimism tuned (5 levers, SPSA run in the style of fishtest): +1.83 ± 2.78 Elo over
    15,006 games at 8+0.08.
  • Pruning of single moves tuned (22 levers: quiet and capture futility, move count, history pruning) and the history
divisor per depth is now a parabola of our own instead of a 16-entry table: +1.71 ± 3.78 Elo over 7,734 games.
  • Correction weights rebalanced around a third pair of moves, our move six plies back with the opponent's last
move, with the other correction weights scaled down so that the total correction keeps its size: +1.13 ± 2.67 Elo over
    16,586 games at 10+0.1.

Time management

  • The extra thinking time after a surprising move is now spent only when we are ahead on the clock, so that a side
already short of time does not lose more of it (neutral in self-play, +0.94 ± 5.30 over 2,578 games at 25+0.25).

Speed

  • Fewer lookups of the sliding-piece attacks inside the network update (same search tree, same bench).

Other

  • Linux: engines started at the same time on one machine share one copy of the network (about 250 MB) instead of one
    copy each.
  • New search options, all off by default (razoring only in ALL nodes, a lower null-move threshold after null-move cuts
among the siblings, a gradual return of the depth after a fail high at the root): they will be measured and tuned in
    the next runs.

Strength

  • Against the pre-release of 29 October: +8.99 ± 4.96 Elo over 4,522 games at 8+0.08, UHO openings (Xeon test
machine, 1 thread each, no hyper-threading; +8.7 and +9.1 on the two sockets). Frozen PGO AVX-512 build of this
source against the published universal executable of 29 October.

Thanks

  • Maurizio Platino (MortalSin), the project's main tester, who also shares the cost of training the networks.
  • A Tin Man and Bastiii, for their code contributions and reviews.
  • CCRL and the computer chess community.
