Since you’re here...

... we have a small favour to ask. More people, like you, are reading and supporting our blog: "Chess Engines Diary". And unlike many other sites and blogs, we made the choice to keep our articles open for all, regardless of where they live or what they can afford to pay.

We hope you will consider supporting us today. We need your support to continue to exist, because good entries are more and more work time. Every reader contribution, however big or small, is so valuable. Support "Chess Engines Diary" even a small amount– and it only takes a minute. Thank you.

Chess engine: Weiawaga 5.0

Weiawaga - UCI chess engine. This is the first release since fully porting the engine to Rust, and so that is by far the biggest change. This release also includes multithreading for the first time via Lazy SMP, the introduction of Static Exchange Evaluation, a switch to Principal Variation Search, and a host of minor optimizations made possible by writing the engine in Rust rather than Java. Author: Heiaha v.5.0 This release introduces an evaluation function based on a NNUE-style architecture of input size 728, with 8 buckets of 256 hidden neurons which is chosen depending on the number of pieces left on the board. This network was trained on 125 million positions from self-play games using Weiawaga v4.0. The only new search change is the introduction of reverse futility pruning. The release also includes many minor optimizations, and is ~350 Elo stronger than Weiawaga v4.0. ************* Jim Ablett compile Weiawaga 5.0 JA download

Chess engine: Chess-Rikus 1.466 JA

Chess-Rikus is an amateur, non-commercial chess-playing engine. It is compatible with Winboard and Xboard, and it can be used standalone with a text interface. It is written in C, and began as a student project in my data structures class at Boston College. Chess-Rikus is free to use, provided you ask my permission before setting it up to play on online game servers or in tournaments against other computer programs. ************* Jim Ablett compile Chess-Rikus 1.466 JA download

New Opening Book: Pampa 3 (bin)

Author: "To the users of my books: The new public books are versions of the books that, in private, served as sparring for me to prepare my competitive books. At this time I am not active in properly optimizing them, so although you are free to use them for whatever purpose you wish (except to clone them), my recommendation is that you do not use them to compete on sites like Playchess or Lichess. They have weak lines of play and are not updated." Pampa3 bin (May 2024) - download source: Biyuyachess.

Use int for Move instead of short - gain from decreased memory does not outweigh cost of constant casting to int Small optimisations in Bitwise, PinCalculator
